Tulip Fever

A few years ago I was working on a series of paintings of species Tulips and I did a lot of reading about the history of the tulip. There I learnt about the wonderful Wakefield and North of England Tulip Society. I was inspired to join the society and have a go at growing some of these exquisite flowers. Sadly I did not have too much success with my bulbs, but we visited their annual show in Wakefield and I was utterly bowled over by the loveliness on display. After the show they very kindly gave me some flowers to paint and this work on vellum of two ‘Flames’ was one of the resulting paintings.

This April the wonderful Heckfield Place Hotel is holding a Tulip festival to celebrate the masses of tulips that they have planted. I have been asked to teach a workshop there on Sunday 14th April. Mary Ellen Taylor, artist and teacher and I will be running two half day workshops for those who want to have a go at a botanical painting of a tulip. All materials will be provided and we want it to be a relaxed and enjoyable experience that may inspire you to continue. Links to further details and booking below;
